The Washington Mystics achieved a significant milestone in their 2026 season by securing a record 28 victories during the regular season. This remarkable feat marks a breakthrough for the team, showcasing their competitive spirit and potential for future successes.
At the heart of this triumph was center Shakira Austin, now 26, whose performance took center stage throughout the 2025-26 season. Austin averaged a career-high of 17 points, contributing significantly with 9.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Her development into a vocal leader on the court played a crucial role in the team’s success.
Despite the impressive season, the Mystics faced a challenging end as they were defeated by the Atlanta Dream in a season-ending match at CareFirst Arena. The atmosphere at the postgame news conference was somber, with many team members visibly affected by the loss.
During the news conference, starter Kiki Iriafen appeared notably downcast, struggling to articulate her thoughts on the game. Fellow teammate Sonia Citron encouraged her to engage in the discussion, emphasizing the importance of reflection and unity during such times.
The Mystics’ journey in the 2026 season, marked by both highs and challenging moments, highlights their potential and sets a strong foundation for the future.
