The Washington Commanders are currently experiencing a challenging situation regarding their quarterbacks. Marcus Mariota, their starting quarterback, sustained a knee injury while playing against the Indianapolis Colts in London. The injury occurred when Mariota was sacked by Laiatu Latu, a defensive lineman for the Colts, during the game on Sunday.
Initially, there was uncertainty about Mariota’s ability to return due to a right knee issue. However, following halftime, it was confirmed that he would not continue playing. This game took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 4, 2026.
Concerns have arisen about Mariota’s MCL, as highlighted by Dr. David Chao, a former chief doctor for the San Diego Chargers. Dr. Chao noted that while there was hope for Mariota’s return, his non-return during multiple team possessions increased worries about his injury. Mariota had a similar MCL injury in 2022 that required surgical intervention.
The Commanders are in a tough spot because their main quarterback, Jayden Daniels, has been sidelined due to a dislocated left elbow sustained in a previous game against the Dallas Cowboys on September 20. Daniels is hopeful for his return to the starting lineup for the Commanders’ upcoming game against the New York Giants next week, as he has recently resumed limited practice.
With both Mariota and Daniels unable to play in this game, rookie Athan Kaliakmanis stepped in. Selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Kaliakmanis was a promising choice from his college years at Minnesota and Rutgers. The Commanders are counting on him to perform well during this match.
