A man celebrating his birthday while on vacation shared a frightening experience when his celebration transformed into a survival struggle due to a severe allergic reaction. According to a 2021 review in the journal Allergy, approximately 1 to 2 percent of individuals in Western countries suffer from peanut allergies, like Ellis Edwards.
These allergies can present symptoms ranging from mild, such as hives and nausea, to severe, including anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a rapid allergic reaction that can cause breathing problems, a dramatic blood pressure drop, or even death without immediate treatment, typically with epinephrine.
Protected planning and clear communication about allergens generally prevent severe allergic reactions. Nonetheless, Edwards encountered an alarming situation during dinner at an unnamed restaurant in Valletta, Malta. He disclosed to Newsweek his serious peanut allergy and his consistent caution in managing it. “Whenever I eat out, I’m extremely careful and always make staff aware before ordering anything,” Edwards remarked.
“On April 30, after dinner, the restaurant staff presented Edwards with several dessert options,” Edwards recalled. He explicitly noted his inability to consume peanuts and was assured that both desserts were safe, according to staff.
After tasting the Oreo dessert suggested by the staff, he felt a tingling sensation and swelling around his mouth and experienced mild breathing difficulty. Suspecting peanut exposure, Edwards requested a fellow diner to taste the dessert, which they confirmed tasted like peanuts.
Edwards raised this concern with the restaurant staff, who insisted no peanuts were present. Trusting their assurances, Edwards paid the bill and departed but soon realized his symptoms were escalating. “My breathing became increasingly difficult, my face started swelling, my eyes were burning and itching, and I realized I was having a full anaphylactic reaction,” Edwards recounted.
His condition rapidly progressed from manageable to life-threatening, causing him to use his EpiPen for epinephrine. Despite administering a second dose, his condition deteriorated further, prompting a call to emergency services. “Those moments were terrifying because I knew I was running out of treatment options before the ambulance arrived,” Edwards noted.
Once paramedics arrived, they treated Edwards for severe anaphylaxis using epinephrine, oxygen, and a nebulizer before hospitalizing him until May 2 under careful medical supervision. “This wasn’t a mild allergic reaction,” Edwards said. “It was a life-threatening medical emergency.” His travel insurance covered the medical expenses, but the ordeal left an impactful aftermath.
Edwards now feels increased anxiety over dining out and mistrust in allergen information from restaurants. “For people with severe food allergies, we have no choice but to trust what we’re told. When that information is wrong, the consequences can be devastating,” Edwards stated.
