Usha Vance, the second lady, welcomed her fourth child on Sunday morning. The announcement came from Vance’s office on X, stating, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”
At age 40, Usha Vance is the first woman since the 1870s to give birth while her husband serves as vice president. She and her spouse, Vice President JD Vance, have three other children. Their sons and daughter range in age from four to nine years old.
JD Vance has indicated that he is unlikely to take parental leave for the newborn. The pregnancy was announced in January, and the baby was expected in late July. The vice president, who has potential plans to run for president in 2028, revealed during a White House event in Michigan that he had to convince his wife to have another child. He recalled saying, “Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid,” to which Usha replied, “Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby.” Vance humorously stated, “But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both.”
Usha Vance confirmed in a subsequent interview with NBC News that JD Vance successfully convinced her to expand their family. Although initially feeling their family was complete after their daughter, Usha said, “As time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility” of having another child. She added, “If there was a chance, I should take it, and I knew that I’d be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I’d be happy if we had four. And so here we are.”
In related developments, the Vice President and second lady are considering leasing a property in Middleburg, Virginia. This residence would be separate from the vice president’s official residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service is preparing to provide enhanced security for the rural property.
