The USC Trojans have suspended linebacker Desman Stephens for one game following a dangerous hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. The incident occurred during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-20 win over the Trojans.
The hit happened as Moore was scrambling and appeared ready to slide after securing a first down. Stephens, arriving late, made direct contact with Moore’s head, leading to his ejection for targeting. In the moments following the hit, Stephens was pushed by Moore’s teammates and briefly celebrated the play, which led to further criticism.
Stephen’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley stated. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences and will learn from this. The entire Trojan Family wishes Dante a full recovery.”
Moore was taken off the field on a stretcher, emphasizing the severity of the incident. After the game, Stephens expressed regret for his behavior.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions,” Stephens said. “Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction was inappropriate. I take full responsibility and I am deeply sorry to Dante, his family and everyone who saw my reaction. It is not representative of USC or our program.”
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning described the hit as “disgusting,” capturing the sentiment shared by many. Moore’s condition and recovery timeline remain a concern, but support and well-wishes have poured in.
Stephens will miss the upcoming game against Washington as part of his suspension. The incident has put additional focus on player safety and conduct in college football.
