US Tariffs on Polysilicon May Slow Solar Energy Growth

Solar energy is experiencing rapid expansion as the leading form of energy generation in the United States. However, recent actions by the Trump administration are expected to increase the costs associated with solar power, affecting its growth trajectory.

Following the midterm elections, President Donald Trump has introduced new measures aimed at boosting local manufacturers. On Thursday, he declared the implementation of a price floor on polysilicon — a crucial element in the production of solar panels and semiconductors. In addition, a 15 percent tariff will now be applied to products fabricated using this material.

The administration’s strategy is to enhance the competitiveness of domestic producers in comparison to their low-cost Chinese counterparts. Yet, these tariffs may hinder the continuing transition to green energy by raising the prices of solar panels in the United States.
