Ulysses Morales Balances Soccer and Football with Determination

Oak Forest student-athlete Ulysses Morales has found himself on an unexpected path in football, yet he remains deeply committed to soccer. As a senior midfielder, he began kicking for the Bengals during his sophomore year and committed to Illinois football in June. Despite considering leaving soccer, Morales chose to manage a demanding schedule filled with both sports.

He recalled, “The football coaches suggested I play, while my soccer coaches supported my decision no matter what. I’m happy I chose to continue soccer in my final year. It’s special to play with friends and enjoy a sport I’ve loved all my life, even though football is my future now.”

His choice to juggle both sports creates busy weekends. Recently, he contributed to Oak Forest football’s 38-0 victory over Stagg on a Friday night and then helped the Bengals to a 1-0 win in soccer against Mount Carmel on Saturday in a Windy City Ram Classic consolation game.

Since his sophomore year, Morales has played both sports, but this year has seen a significant shift in his focus toward football, making it the most challenging year yet. “This is the first year I’ve focused heavily on football, and it’s demanding. My legs are constantly adapting, and I’ve been visiting the trainer more for recovery,” he explained.

Morales’ journey in football began unexpectedly. He first attempted kicking during his sophomore year and didn’t initially foresee a significant future in it. Reflecting on that time, he said, “After my sophomore year, I questioned if it was worth continuing. The time and financial investment seemed daunting. But Chris Nendick, my kicking coach, instilled confidence in me, improving my form, power, and strength.”

Last season, Morales successfully made five field goals for Oak Forest and displayed strong kickoff skills. His football potential became evident during offseason college camps, catching the attention of several coaches. “Purdue was the first school to reach out to me in January, which was a surprise. Things picked up in March when Arkansas State made an offer. Illinois extended an offer in June, and I committed instantly. It was a joyful moment to celebrate with my family,” Morales shared.

He attributes his growth in kicking to mental improvements. “In my sophomore year, I doubted myself and was afraid to play. Now, I trust my abilities and embrace opportunities to kick game-winning goals.”

On the soccer field, Morales has also earned trust. Oak Forest coach Alex Alvarez appreciates Morales’ passion for soccer, despite his focus on football. “Football might be his top priority now as it promises a future, but his love for soccer is undeniable. We give him flexibility with his schedule, knowing how important soccer remains to him. Though not a captain, his leadership is evident among his peers.”
