PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Jackson Koivun has been named to the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup, shortly after his departure from Auburn. This 21-year-old golfer is one of two new members on a team known for its 28-year streak of victories. Koivun’s win at the 3M Open in his third professional start and his entry into the PGA Tour postseason after only five events highlights his rapid rise. He follows Jordan Spieth’s 2013 accomplishment of joining the Presidents Cup without beginning the year with a tour card.
Brandt Snedeker, the U.S. captain, also selected Jacob Bridgeman, whose victory at Riviera adds to his credentials. The decision to pick Bridgeman over Ryan Gerard, ranked No. 22 in the world and a contender at the Tour Championship, was noteworthy.
Geoff Ogilvy, captain of the International team, selected two Canadians, Corey Conners and Nick Taylor, alongside Ryo Hisatsune. The inclusion of two Japanese players, with Hideki Matsuyama securing an automatic spot, marks a first since 1998 for the International team.
The Presidents Cup is scheduled for September 24-27 at Medinah Country Club, which has undergone a complete renovation by Ogilvy’s Australia-based golf design firm.
