President Donald Trump announced, “I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz.” The cessation agreement includes plans to cease hostilities, withdraw U.S. forces from Lebanon, and Tehran’s reaffirmation to abstain from producing nuclear weapons. Additionally, oil and certain financial sanctions on Iran are set to be lifted, with final negotiations occurring over a 60-day period. The agreement’s signing is slated for Friday in Switzerland.
In preparation for his trip to the G7 summit in France, Trump will meet with allies who are at odds regarding Iran and the Russia-Ukraine situation. U.S. political figures such as Sen. Lindsey Graham expect Trump to express frustration over European leaders’ lack of support concerning Iran.
Israel’s response to this agreement remains uncertain, especially after an Israeli strike on Lebanon that brought about criticism from Iran and Trump. Defense Minister Israel Katz declares that Israeli forces will persist in their established “security zones” in Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria.
