In a concerning incident early Saturday morning, two Philadelphia police officers were shot multiple times by a gunman, leading to their urgent hospital admission, authorities reported. The incident took place around 1 a.m. on the 100 block of North 52nd Street in West Philadelphia.
Police were responding to a report about an armed man on a house porch. Upon arrival, they faced heavy gunfire from the suspect, explained Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
The injured officers were taken into surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. There has been no immediate update on their conditions.
Commissioner Bethel detailed that one officer, a 40-year-old with two children, suffered three gunshot wounds. Another officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times.
Following the initial attack, additional officers responded and managed to capture the suspect, who continued firing during the standoff. The police extracted the suspect from a tree and took him into custody. At the scene, three firearms were retrieved: two handguns and a shotgun. One of the handguns belonged to one of the injured officers, as stated by Bethel.
Mayor Cherelle Parker acknowledged the incident as a stark reminder of the risks faced by police officers daily. She urged public prayers for the officers’ recovery, expressing gratitude for their dedication.
I want to be very clear, I am grateful for their service and the reason is because for nights like tonight. We think of them as law enforcement officers, but I see mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters,Parker remarked.
