Trinidad Chambliss’ progress during the 2025 season became a notable chapter in college football last fall. Previously a quarterback at Division II Ferris State, Chambliss began as a backup to Austin Simmons. He made his debut start against Arkansas on September 13, after Simmons faced an injury. In that game, Chambliss threw for 353 yards and one touchdown, leading to a 41-35 victory against the Razorbacks. He also impressed on the ground with 62 yards and two touchdowns.
Throughout the season, Chambliss threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns, with only three interceptions. His rushing stats included 527 yards and eight touchdowns, playing a key role in Ole Miss reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Former Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin earned compliments for recognizing Chambliss’ potential in the transfer portal and enhancing his skills as a quarterback.
However, there are dissenting views from within the SEC about the accolades directed at Kiffin for Chambliss’ performance. An anonymous SEC coach commented to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that the credit given to Kiffin for Chambliss might be excessive. “He’s a dude,” the coach remarked about Chambliss, implying that Chambliss’ talent stands on its own.
Chambliss demonstrated two strong performances after Kiffin’s departure to LSU. In the CFP quarterfinal against Georgia, he threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns, contributing to a 39-34 victory. In the CFP semifinal against Miami, he recorded 277 yards and one touchdown, although Ole Miss fell short with a 31-27 loss.
The upcoming matchup on September 19 between Kiffin’s LSU and Chambliss’ Ole Miss draws interest. Kiffin will be focusing on the development of Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt. Should Leavitt achieve success similar to Chambliss’, it could reinforce Kiffin’s reputation for nurturing quarterbacks.
For Chambliss, the season presents a chance to affirm he is among the top college quarterbacks independently of Kiffin’s guidance. Success in this endeavor could enhance his prospects for the 2027 draft.
