Treasury Department Prepares Commemorative $250 Note with Trump’s Portrait

The U.S. Treasury Department is laying the groundwork for a $250 currency note featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait, planned for release during the nation’s 250th anniversary. However, the bill’s release hinges on Congress amending federal law, which currently prohibits featuring living individuals on U.S. currency.

“At Treasury, we prepare things in advance,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “If the legislation is passed, we will adhere to the law.”

Representative Joe Wilson, a Republican from South Carolina, introduced the bill in February 2025. His proposal aims to coincide with America’s birthday and stand in contrast to the Biden administration’s economic policies. The bill currently resides with the House Financial Services Committee.

A Treasury spokesperson confirmed, “In response to active legislation sponsored by Representative Joe Wilson, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence. Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the BEP is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note, recognizing the 250th Anniversary of our nation.”

If passed, this note will become the eighth denomination alongside the existing seven: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. In January, Rep. Andy Barr shared a mock-up of the bill on social media, depicting a design with red, white, and blue colors behind Trump’s image.

Opposition has been strong, mainly from Democratic lawmakers. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized the proposal for focusing on Trump’s legacy instead of the national celebration. Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the anniversary should celebrate the American journey, not individual ambition.

Senator Mark Warner also criticized the move, attributing it to Trump’s ego and suggesting that he should focus on lowering costs for families. The Democratic National Committee used social media to highlight what they view as misplaced priorities, contrasting the proposal with pressing national issues.

Aside from the note, the Treasury has announced that Trump’s signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency. This change will occur alongside the signatures of Treasury officials to mark the country’s significant milestone.
