Train Accident Near Tokyo Results in Four Fatalities

A tragic incident occurred at Shin-Kanuma Station, north of Tokyo, involving the Tokyo-bound Spacia express train. Authorities reported the train collided with four workers on the Tobu Nikko Line in Kanuma on Thursday, resulting in fatalities.

The accident involved a crew responsible for weed-control duties on the railway track. According to Tochigi prefectural police, the victims were three workers and a supervisor. Despite being swiftly taken to a hospital, they were pronounced dead upon arrival. Tobu Railway Co., the train operator, confirmed these details.

Six additional individuals present at the scene, including two workers, three lookouts, and an on-site supervisor, were unharmed. The assignment involved spraying herbicide, and none of the approximately 50 passengers on the train suffered injuries.

Uncertainty remains as to why the workers did not vacate the site when the train approached. The actions of the lookout personnel are under scrutiny as part of the investigation. Premature findings suggest possible miscommunication, though detailed circumstances prior to and during the incident are being closely examined.

Lookout workers are trained to signal others of an incoming train, prompting evacuation. They use a flag to alert the train, prompting the driver to horn as acknowledgment while proceeding cautiously.

Japan’s transportation system is noted for its safety and punctuality, making fatal train accidents uncommon. Tobu’s head of railway operations, Takao Suzuki, expressed sincere apologies for the incident. He emphasized the company’s commitment to understanding the cause and implementing measures to prevent recurrence.

Train services on the line were temporarily halted but resumed later that day.
