Tragic Falls Claim Lives of Two Hikers on Sauk Mountain

A tragic incident unfolded in Washington state, resulting in the death of two hikers over the weekend. Gary Idleburg, aged 66, fell between 800 and 1,000 feet while hiking the switchback trails of Sauk Mountain in the Northern Cascades, northeast of Seattle. This unfortunate event occurred last Saturday, as reported by the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses reported seeing Idleburg, a resident of Olympia, fall from the trail. Despite the quick response from emergency personnel, efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A day prior to Idleburg’s fall, another hiker went missing and was later found deceased on steep terrain of the same mountain. The hiker was identified as Peter Kalapaca, a 78-year-old who had been missing for a day.

The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office expressed their condolences to the Kalapaca family, acknowledging the difficult loss. They also commended the coordinated search efforts that provided a level of closure for the family.

Both incidents occurred in challenging terrains of Sauk Mountain. According to reports, Idleburg was found in a particularly difficult-to-access area. Kalapaca’s search involved multiple resources, including ground teams, air units, air-scent K9s, and mountain rescue crews, who worked through the evening to locate him.

Witnesses played a crucial role by guiding rescuers to the location where Idleburg had fallen. This tragic weekend highlighted the dangers that can occur in rugged hiking settings.

Sauk Mountain, nestled within Washington’s Northern Cascades, is known for its challenging trails and scenic views, attracting many hikers despite the risks.
