An EF-1 tornado swept through Hazel Crest, Homewood, Country Club Hills, and Harvey, while another EF-0 tornado impacted Orland Park. Additionally, an EF-1 tornado with peak winds reaching 110 mph was previously reported in Lansing.
Nakita Cloud, a spokesperson for Hazel Crest, remarked on the magnitude of the damage. Extensive power outages continued to plague Hazel Crest as of Wednesday morning, prompting the village to advise residents to stay indoors due to downed power lines. Cloud emphasized the dangers posed by these lines and the need for caution, especially around children and pets.
The tornado affecting Homewood and Hazel Crest had a complex path, with details still under review by the National Weather Service. Homewood Mayor Rich Hofeld described the aftermath, noting widespread power outages and ongoing challenges with traffic signals. Key municipal buildings operated on generators, and the village was working to assist those relying on medical devices.
Mayor Hofeld expressed appreciation for the community spirit in the face of adversity. The tornado caused more extensive damage than a previous incident in 2024, affecting a broader area. Homewood has set up a survey for residents to report any damage by August 5.
The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Steger at the Louis Sherman Community Center, offering a refuge for the displaced. Fay Kiaurakis, the center’s director, reported robust community support, with donations including clothing and food provided to those in need. Activities like a splash pad were organized to create a positive environment for children at the shelter.
Crete residents Seldon Ledford and his wife used the shelter for essential services as power remained out in their flooded home. The couple described the storm’s intensity and its impact on their property.
In Orland Park, Mayor Jim Dodge said that power was restored to most areas by Wednesday morning, though some residents remained without due to damage concentrated in certain parts. While no funnel clouds were reported, the tornado’s confirmed presence highlighted the storm’s severity. Mayor Dodge expressed relief at the absence of casualties.
Lansing experienced its worst damage around Oakwood Estates, according to Dennis Murrin, the village preparedness coordinator. While some areas escaped severe harm, the cleanup continued as the community sought to recover from unprecedented destruction.
