Fans are sharing their opinions following Tom Holland’s recent revelation about his preferred successor for the Spider-Man role. Holland, who will continue his part as Spider-Man in the upcoming title “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” disclosed his pick in an Esquire interview.
Holland expressed his desire to play a mentor role, similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s influence on him during his initial three films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” he said.
Holland named Owen Cooper, suggesting that Cooper would excel as the new Spider-Man. “Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” Holland stated, referring to the 16-year-old actor known for his performance in Netflix’s “Adolescence.” Cooper has been recognized with awards such as Best Supporting Actor at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, British Academy Television Awards, and Emmys.
Fans have taken to social media to express their excitement about Holland’s selection. One fan commented, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in Adolescence. He absolutely has the acting chops for Peter Parker.” Another fan added, “If Marvel actually pulls the trigger on this, the casting would be absolutely elite.”
Despite Holland’s endorsement, some fans are hesitant to see him leave the Spider-Man role he has embodied since “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016. A fan expressed, “Tom Holland out here doing God’s work by naming his successor Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the vision but I’m still not ready to say goodbye to Tom’s Peter Parker.”
Earlier in the month, Holland discussed his aspirations for the franchise’s future in an Empire interview. He indicated a willingness to help set up the next chapter, potentially featuring characters like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset,” he added.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is scheduled to premiere on July 31.
