Three Charged in Tragic Rope-Jumping Death in Brazil

Incident Overview

Three individuals have been charged with homicide following the death of a woman during a rope-jumping activity in Limeira, Brazil. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, plunged more than 130 feet from a bridge without being secured to safety equipment.

Legal Actions Taken

Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, were arrested and charged with homicide with eventual intent. This charge is used in situations where the accused did not intend to kill but engaged in an act carrying fatal risks. The three men, identified as jumping instructors, were caught attempting to flee and remain in detention.

Police investigator Andrea Levy confirmed that the instructors acknowledged the lack of safety ropes for Eduarda but could not recall who was responsible for her equipment check. Their defense attorney stated that the men were in shock following the incident.

Details of the Event

Video footage shows Eduarda being held by two men and then tossed over the bridge, wearing a helmet but without visible safety cords. The bridge, known as Skeleton Bridge, was previously a railway structure now unused for several years.

The sport of rope jumping uses climbing ropes for a pendulum swing, differing from bungee jumping’s elastic cords. Notably, Dan Osman, the sport’s originator, died during a jump in 1998.

Community and Family Reactions

Tributes have emerged from loved ones and community members. Panobianco Academia, a local gym, praised Eduarda for her dedication and joy, closing the gym in her honor. Eduarda’s mother expressed her grief and the deep impact of her daughter’s death on social media.

Government Response

Limeira’s city officials plan to sue the federal government, citing inadequate efforts to secure the area around Skeleton Bridge. Mayor Murilo Félix emphasized the need for action from federal authorities, attributing responsibility for the bridge to them.

Federal officials have yet to respond to comments on the incident. The governor’s office stated that Eduarda’s equipment was not properly secured and acknowledged her request to be launched from the bridge like a plane.

Eduarda’s last social media post hinted at her excitement, stating, “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge?”
