A mother in Florida experienced a startling moment when she discovered her three-week-old baby on the couch. The revelation came after viewing security camera footage, revealing the shocking sequence of events.
Discovery and Shock
Jessica Fortner, along with her two-year-old son Greyson and daughter Everleigh, were at a friend’s place when the incident occurred. Fortner stated, “That morning was like any other since having our daughter. My partner was out of town working, and I was solo parenting, which is quite normal for us.”
The Mystery of the Bassinet
Initially, Everleigh was comfortably asleep in her bassinet, protected by a zip-up mesh cover. Meanwhile, Greyson was occupied elsewhere. Fortner took a moment to visit the bathroom. “I heard a little fussing from Everleigh, but it stopped quickly. I didn’t give it much thought because she’s typically a cheerful baby,” Fortner recalled.
Upon returning to the living room, Fortner stumbled upon Everleigh lying on the couch. The realization followed quickly; Greyson had unzipped the bassinet and lifted his sister shortly after Fortner left the room. His ability to carry her to the couch remained a puzzle.
Cameras Reveal the Truth
Fortunately, a security camera positioned in the living room captured the entire scene. Reviewing the footage, Fortner was able to piece together what had transpired. Increasingly, parents are using in-home security cameras to monitor their children more closely.
A survey by OnePoll, commissioned by technology company Asurion, found 59% of 2,000 U.S. parents have a Wi-Fi-enabled camera in their homes. It also revealed 76% use smart technology, like cameras and video doorbells, to enhance child safety.
While Fortner appreciated the security camera footage for the clarity it offered, the viewing was intense. The footage showed Greyson carrying Everleigh across the room. “I felt myself holding my breath the entire time, hoping he wouldn’t drop her,” Fortner described. “When he eventually placed her on the couch, the relief was immense, mixed with horror at his lack of support for her head and neck.”
Reflections on the Event
Greyson, not very talkative then, managed to express his intentions when asked by Fortner, replying, “I help Sissy.”
With time, Fortner’s emotions about the video have evolved. “It’s a story that, as time went on, became less scary. I started showing it to friends and family, often saying, ‘Look at this. You’ll never believe what Grey did,'” she shared.
Ultimately, Fortner shared the clip and story as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of children. “Kids will do anything mischievous, regardless of how attentive a parent is. As terrifying as it might be, it also forms a lasting family memory,” she added.
