On March 10, a tornado struck Lake Village, prompting urgent calls to Newton County’s dispatch. At 7:17 p.m., reports of a house hit followed, with three people inside. Subsequent calls revealed significant damage around County Roads 600 W and 900 N. A full response request was made to the fire departments of Lowell, Morocco, and Lake Village Township. The 911 call log emphasized the need for maximum assistance. Jim Large, Newton County’s E-911 director, shared insights on how the community managed this rare EF3 tornado.
Preparation and Early Warnings
Earlier that day, Matt VanDrunen, Emergency Management Director, attended a meeting in Valparaiso. Weather conditions showed humid temperatures in the 70s, leading to a tornado watch issued at 4 p.m. Spotters were dispatched by 5:49 p.m., including teams in Illinois who tracked the tornado’s progress eastward. Newton County activated sirens based on sights from trained spotters, even before an official warning at 7:08 p.m.
Dispatch Challenges and On-ground Efforts
Newton County received 117 calls post-tornado, with 43 answered directly. Backup dispatch centers in surrounding counties handled overflow. Rob Churchill, Lake Village Township Fire Chief, reported significant damage and guided coordination efforts in Lake Village. Trained weather spotters observed the tornado’s arrival, facilitating preemptive alerts.
Tornado Severity and Meteorological Insights
Eric Lenning of the National Weather Service led a team assessing tornado damage on March 11. An EF3 tornado, defined by wind speeds of 136 to 165 mph, devastated several Lake Village homes. This tornado reached a peak wind speed of 160 mph, narrowly missing EF4 classification.
Severe storms involve instability and wind shear, contributing to the extended intensity and rotation of storms. The National Weather Service’s predictions had forecasted high storm activity well in advance.
Continued Damage and Recovery Efforts
In following weeks, Lake Village residents faced visible tornado aftermath. Rooftop tarps and debris lined roads, depicting widespread destruction. Trustee Nikki Hanger expressed emotional challenges while balancing personal loss and community responsibilities.
The EMA director reported damage to 142 properties. Financial assessments remain pending. Individuals like Bud Bushman shared their personal experiences during the tornado, highlighting the trauma and resilience of the local community.
