Every electric vehicle, battery storage system, transmission line, wind turbine, solar installation, and next-generation nuclear reactor relies on materials extracted from the earth. Before America can construct the necessary infrastructure for artificial intelligence, data centers, advanced manufacturing, and an increasingly electrified economy, securing critical minerals remains a priority. Americans recognize one thing: the future demands more electricity.

Whether the focus is on economic growth, energy security, national defense, or reducing emissions, meeting these demands calls for a significant expansion of America’s energy infrastructure, as stated by the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation. Yet, a fundamental truth often gets overlooked: mining is essential for a clean energy transition.

The International Energy Agency states that critical minerals are indispensable for clean energy technologies. Minerals like copper, lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, rare earth elements, and uranium form the foundation for modern technology. They are integral to electric vehicles, batteries, transmission lines, renewable energy systems, advanced nuclear technologies, and defense systems that protect the nation.

While new energy technologies rapidly progress in America, the mineral supply chains needed to support them lag. The U.S. has substantial reserves of critical minerals, coupled with the engineering expertise, skilled workforce, and technological capacities necessary to develop them responsibly. Nevada’s lithium resources, Arizona’s copper reserves, Wyoming’s rare earth potential, and Idaho’s cobalt deposits demonstrate these capabilities.

The question is whether America can develop these resources in a timely and responsible manner. Responsible mineral development does not conflict with robust environmental protections. The goal is not reducing safeguards but creating a rigorous, predictable permitting system capable of timely decisions.

Currently, developing new mining projects can take over a decade. According to a noted S&P Global study, mining development timelines often exceed 15 years due to overlapping reviews, lengthy litigation, and uncertainty before construction begins. The Congressional Research Service highlights the complexity of federal permitting under the National Environmental Policy Act.

Environmental oversight is crucial, but endless delays do not necessarily result in better outcomes. A lack of predictability in the permitting system discourages investment and increases dependence on foreign suppliers, posing not only economic concerns but also national security risks.

The same materials essential for energy technologies are vital for fighter aircraft, advanced electronics, and defense technologies. America’s energy future and national security rely on the same mineral supply chains. Currently, China holds significant influence in the global processing and refining of critical minerals, impacting materials crucial for modern industry and defense.

America should avoid reliance on geopolitical competitors for critical resources to power the economy, strengthen the electric grid, and protect the nation. Enhancing domestic mineral production requires more than identifying deposits. Investment in mapping, research, processing capacity, and training of engineers, scientists, and skilled workers is essential.

Advanced technologies can efficiently locate resources and reduce unnecessary exploration. Better information enables responsible development, good-paying jobs, and stronger domestic supply chains. The U.S. has a history with strategic minerals. Domestic uranium production supported America’s past nuclear program, and as interest grows in advanced nuclear technologies, reliable access to nuclear fuel gains importance.

Relying heavily on foreign material sources while embracing next-generation nuclear power makes little sense. This is not an argument for weakening environmental protections but for producing necessary minerals under America’s rigorous standards rather than outsourcing extraction processes.

Outsourcing mining does not negate environmental impacts; it merely transfers them elsewhere. If America is serious about energy independence, economic competitiveness, and national security, recognizing the foundational role of critical minerals is crucial.

The clean energy transition relies on the responsible development of materials. America’s clean energy future begins beneath the ground.
