The Remarkable Kanneh-Mason Family: A Classical Music Phenomenon

The Kanneh-Mason family has redefined the boundaries of classical music from their home in Nottingham, England. Contrary to expectations, this modest household has produced seven exceptional musicians, who have graced renowned concert stages worldwide, often performing as soloists. Despite the grandeur of their music, they remain a tight-knit group of siblings.

Meet the Kanneh-Masons

All under 30 when first introduced, the siblings offer a refreshing presence in the classical music scene, which is eager for younger representation. The family includes Jeneba (23), Aminata (20), Sheku (26), Braimah (27), Isata (30), Konya (26), and Mariatu (17).

When back home, their house fills with the sounds of classical music—Bach, Beethoven, Brahms—as each sibling practices. The environment nurtured their exceptional talents, with each of them excelling in different instruments. As representatives of this musical dynasty, they are breaking barriers and appealing to a diverse, youthful audience.

A Unique Musical Environment

“It’s because of how close we are. We know each other’s playing very well,” said Jeneba and Sheku, highlighting the telepathic connection that enhances their performances.

Parents Kadie Kanneh (Sierra Leone) and Stuart Mason (London) didn’t originally intend for their children to become musicians. Music was merely one of many activities on their busy schedule, including sports like cricket, football, and gymnastics.

Isata led the way, beginning piano at age six, which inspired her siblings. Sheku, influenced by his brother Braimah, chose the cello over the violin, adding a touch of healthy sibling competition. Despite financial strains, the family invested in their children’s musical education, with all seven attending the Royal Academy of Music’s junior program.

The Kanneh-Mason Approach

The family organized weekly ‘Sunday Concerts’ where each sibling performed and received constructive feedback from the others. These sessions were crucial for their development, providing a realistic pressure akin to live performances.

Unlike typical stage parents, Kadie and Stuart allowed their children to guide their paths, focusing on passion over commercial pursuits. This autonomy led them to participate in shows like “Britain’s Got Talent” under their terms, emphasizing classical repertoire.

Achievements and Individual Paths

Sheku gained international fame after performing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. He has since become a celebrated figure, achieving critical milestones like being the first cellist in the UK top 10 album charts.

The siblings continue to pursue individual careers while maintaining their familial bond. Konya has shifted to writing fiction, Aminata revisited music after a stint in acting school, and Braimah explored pop music with Clean Bandit before returning to classical roots. Meanwhile, Mariatu plans to pursue a professional music career.

Despite their individual successes, they consistently support one another, underscoring their commitment to their collective identity while pursuing personal growth. Their dynamic balance of collaboration and personal achievement exemplifies a harmonious blend of talent and family spirit.
