The Case for Italian Beef as Illinois’ State Sandwich

The Case for Italian Beef as Illinois’ State Sandwich

In Springfield, the hometown of the horseshoe sandwich, state Representative Rick Ryan, D-Evergreen Park, presented a compelling argument on Wednesday. He proposed that the official state sandwich of Illinois should not be the current ham-and-cheese creation with french fries, but rather the more refined Italian beef sandwich. Ryan described the Italian beef as a feast of flavors and textures, particularly when seasoned well and dipped generously.

To bolster his argument, Ryan was joined by actor Corey Hendrix, known for his role in the FX series “The Bear,” which highlights the Italian beef as a Chicago staple. This debate reflects the ongoing Chicagoland versus downstate cultural divide. The horseshoe sandwich has been seen at places like TriBecca’s Sandwich Shop in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, though it was missing from their menu recently. The sandwich has become rare in Chicago, akin to spotting a Great Lakes piping plover.

The Italian beef, conversely, is widely enjoyed across the region. Notable spots for this sandwich include Johnnie’s Beef in Forest Park, known for its dipped variety. Others like Al’s #1 and Luke’s also offer excellent versions, with Luke’s conveniently located near many offices. Mr. Beef, arguably the most famous, is available at Midway International Airport and offers an authentic experience on N. Orleans St.

Ryan’s proposal suggests replacing the horseshoe’s official status with the Italian beef. He argues that the Italian beef represents Illinois far better than the horseshoe. In a compromise reflected in the state’s legislative amendments, the horseshoe retains a revised status as the official open-faced sandwich of Illinois, aligning it more closely with dishes like the Danish smørrebrød or the French tartine.

While some Italian beef establishments will close for Memorial Day, an array of Chicago-style food stands remain open. These offer options such as gyros, brats, Jibaritos, and hand-cut fries, perfect for holiday enjoyment.
