A rally in support of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham in Chicago ignited heated reactions on Saturday. Supporters gathered outside the United Center only to be met by a vocal and hostile group of counterprotesters.
Opposition Displays Hostility
The opposition group wore masks and held signs while playing loud music with aggressive lyrics. In an attempt to provoke, they chanted phrases like ‘And we’ll never rest again until every Nazi dies’ and ‘F— these f—ing fascists.’ This confrontation occurred before the WNBA game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever.
When questioned, the counterprotesters accused Cunningham’s supporters of being Nazis and fascists. One supporter of transgender rights expressed feeling that transgender youth are marginalized and simply want inclusion in sports. However, attempts to engage in a meaningful dialogue were promptly interrupted by other protesters.
Cunningham’s Supporters Stand Firm
Cunningham’s advocates included a group led by 1986 U.S. Women’s All-Around National Champion Jennifer Sey, who criticized the WNBA for not taking a clear stand in support of traditional female sports. The group aimed to rally behind Cunningham and her stance on maintaining sports and spaces for women.
Sey remarked, ‘Our message for Sophie is: We support you. We don’t want her to stand alone.’ She noted this protest was more peaceful compared to a previous one in Minnesota.
Divided Stance Reflected in Arena
Inside the arena, the divide continued with Cunningham facing boos from the crowd over her comments regarding women’s sports. This included a confrontation where Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington was ejected after committing a harsh foul against Cunningham.
Instances of bias were noted during in-game presentations, where fans wearing trans pride attire were highlighted. This aligns with ongoing political statements and affiliations displayed at games.
