The Tennessee Volunteers have had a challenging offseason following the dismissal of transfer player Chaz Coleman from Penn State. This situation worsened when Tennessee learned about the suspension of their star linebacker, Arion Carter, by the NCAA.
According to Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News, Carter received a two-game suspension because he accepted a $427 flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility from his agent. Despite reimbursing the cost, the NCAA cited this as an impermissible benefit.
Carter initially declared for the 2026 NFL draft but withdrew due to an injury requiring surgery. The NCAA rules clearly state that student-athletes cannot sign with agents while exploring NFL draft prospects. Violating this rule led to Carter’s suspension.
“When student-athletes violate NCAA rules, the school declares them ineligible and works with the national office to determine requirements for reinstatement, which can include repayment and/or withholding from competition,” the NCAA stated.
The suspension means Tennessee will play Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12 without Carter on the field. Last year, Carter earned second-team All-SEC honors, with notable stats like 76 tackles and two passes defended.
Head Coach Josh Huepel expressed his disagreement with the NCAA’s decision, emphasizing Carter’s choice prioritized his health. He highlighted Carter’s academic achievements and team support.
“Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being. He will proudly graduate from Tennessee in public health with Dean’s List honors. Our team stands behind AC, and we can’t wait to be on the field with him during training camp next week,” Huepel stated.
