Surprising Trade Requests Highlight NHL Offseason

NHL free agency is set to begin on Wednesday. This offseason stands out due to the focus on players seeking trades rather than those entering free agency. Zach Werenski, the Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman, is one of the most unexpected trade requests.

Werenski informed general manager Don Waddell of his desire to leave shortly after earning the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s best defenseman. His head coach, Rick Bowness, expressed surprise at the request. Bowness said, “I’m as shocked as anyone that these came up,” according to The Athletic. He added that their end-of-year meetings seemed positive and concluded with a hug.

Forward Kirill Marchenko also indicated he wants to move on from the team. These developments have surprised many, especially given Werenski’s recent accolade and the fact that his contract runs through the 2027-28 season.

The Blue Jackets endured a disappointing end to their season, leading to their absence from the playoffs. Despite this, much of the regular season appeared promising. Bowness’s intense post-season message was intended to motivate players. However, it seems not all players were moved.

While a player requesting a trade after winning a Norris Trophy is not ideal for any team, Werenski’s award has increased his trade value. Should the Blue Jackets manage to negotiate a trade, they could receive significant assets in return. Werenski’s talent makes him a valuable asset and difficult to replace.
