A couple from Southern California recently experienced an unexpected birth story when their daughter arrived in a Jack in the Box parking lot. Firefighters assisted in the delivery after a hurried attempt to reach the hospital. Michelle Cisneros and Darren Campbell welcomed their daughter, Valentina Isla Campbell, last Friday at an Orange County fast-food outlet.
The family noted that Valentina was born 15 days early, adding to the unexpected nature of her arrival. Cisneros initially thought the contractions might be Braxton Hicks, stating, “But at that point my contractions were five minutes apart and they were getting more intense, so I thought I’ll just go to labor and delivery just to be safe.”
Despite the joyous outcome, the parents are questioning whether the roadside birth could have been prevented. Cisneros mentioned she was evaluated and discharged from a nearby hospital twice prior to the birth. At Hoag Hospital, she was monitored for about an hour before being discharged. Nurses had told her to return if her contractions were three minutes apart. She said, “We made it downstairs and we were timing them, and they were three minutes apart.”
Upon returning to the hospital, Cisneros was observed for another hour and given morphine due to intense pain. She was then advised to continue laboring at home. Darren Campbell attempted to persuade the hospital staff to keep them there, emphasizing their concerns over the three-minute gap between contractions.
Despite the chaos, the couple initially believed they could still reach the hospital in time. However, they pulled into a Jack in the Box parking lot two miles from home and called 911. Firefighters arrived and assisted in delivering Valentina. Campbell remembered his wife’s words, “She’s coming,” and realized the urgency of the situation. The presence of firefighters brought relief, with both parents expressing profound relief as they heard their daughter cry for the first time.
Cisneros reflected on the experience, emphasizing the importance of trust in one’s instincts. “Women should know that they can advocate for themselves and they know their body best,” she said. Campbell echoed her sentiments, reinforcing the value of relying on one’s feelings. After a few days of recovery, the family returned home with their new addition.
