Social Media Post by NYC Coffee Shop Sparks Controversy

A small coffee shop chain in New York City stirred a controversy with a social media post attacking a congressman. The incident highlights ongoing tensions over support for Israel in one of the city’s most progressive and predominantly Jewish districts.

Incident at Poetica Coffee

Congressman Dan Goldman visited Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Sunday. He was outside his district, accompanied by his 7-year-old daughter. This visit coincided with the final day for early voting in a Democratic primary race where he faces a tough competitor.

Later, the coffee shop posted a critical message on Instagram. The post featured a photo of Goldman at the shop, seemingly taken from security footage. The caption contained harsh words, suggesting that Goldman was not welcome due to his political stance.

“We see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee,” the post remarked, mocking the congressman’s presence. It included a provocative question about the taste of the coffee in relation to his views.

The post added that the shop does not serve individuals they consider to be “racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers or anyone in between.” The tone indicated that had they recognized him earlier, they would have refused service.

Goldman’s Response

Dan Goldman, known for his support of Israel, which has been a contentious topic in his re-election campaign, responded in the comments. He explained that his purpose for the visit was to let his daughter use the restroom and he bought a coffee as a gesture of thanks to the employee who permitted it.
