After a disappointing start to the season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, suffered their second consecutive loss against the Cleveland Browns, losing 23-19 in Week 2. The game saw the Browns stage an impressive comeback, with Mayfield struggling to lead his team to victory in the final quarter.
Following this defeat, questions have arisen regarding the financial commitment the Buccaneers have made to Mayfield. Former NFL running back Damien Harris, now an analyst with CBS Sports, posed critical remarks about Mayfield’s output in response to his contract. Harris commented, “Baker Mayfield ain’t worth that money. I’m just gonna go ahead and say it. He’s not worth that money.”
“That’s been the tale of his career. Sometimes he plays like it, but sometimes he doesn’t,” Harris added. “Why do you guarantee that much money to a quarterback where essentially, every time you’re rolling the ball out there, he’s a competitor, he’s scrappy, but which version of Baker are you gonna get?”
Harris highlighted Mayfield’s inconsistent play, which he noted as evident in the Buccaneers’ recent games. He elaborated, “Are you gonna get the hot hand or the cold Baker Mayfield? That’s what we’re seeing the past two games. He’s not living up to the contract.”
While acknowledging issues beyond Mayfield, such as Emeka Egbuka and the struggling run game, Harris stressed that Mayfield’s performance has been subpar, particularly in Sunday’s game. Mayfield completed 61.8% of his passes, logging 182 yards, one touchdown, and one crucial interception that led to a Browns field goal, altering the game’s outcome.
Reflecting on the Week 1 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals, Harris mentioned Mayfield’s turnovers contributed to the points scored by the Bengals, ultimately leading to defeat. He stated bluntly, “I apologize for being blunt, but he’s not worth that kind of money,” emphasizing the financial commitment involved.
In September, ESPN reported Mayfield’s three-year, $165 million extension with the Buccaneers. Despite an 0-2 start, the season provides Mayfield a chance to reassess and guide the Buccaneers towards victories in future games.
The Buccaneers will aim for redemption in Week 3 as they host the undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, September 27, at 4:25 p.m. ET.
