Sam Burns on LIV Golf and PGA Tour Dynamics

Sam Burns, a prominent figure in the PGA Tour, never thought of leaving for LIV Golf when it launched in 2022. Despite the lure, Burns held no grudges against those who chose differently. As LIV faces an uncertain future, Burns expressed openness to the return of stars like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau to the PGA.

During an interview with OutKick, Burns emphasized the importance of having the best players compete together. ‘I think it’s best for the game of golf as a whole,’ Burns said. ‘You want to play against the best players every week.’

“Ultimately, I think there will be a path back for those guys,” Burns added, acknowledging the uncertainty around what that would involve.

When LIV Golf began, Burns, currently ranked No. 7 globally, remained loyal to the PGA Tour. Despite rumors in 2022 about his potential defection, Burns clarified his unwavering support for the tour, telling OutKick at a local event in St. Louis that it was an easy decision for him.

Burns expressed a degree of empathy toward those who chose LIV, understanding that personal circumstances vary widely. ‘I don’t blame anyone for going,’ he shared. ‘Everyone has the freedom to choose the path they want to take.’

Burns’ perspective appears balanced. He acknowledges the complexities of decisions and maintains an open stance toward colleagues in LIV. As an example, he referenced Brooks Koepka’s return to the PGA earlier this year, which involved financial penalties and restrictions under the Returning Member Program for 2026.

However, this program was temporary, and the PGA Tour did not set an ongoing path for returning LIV players. Meanwhile, changes within LIV are significant. The Saudi Public Investment Fund announced plans to cease financial support after 2026, leading to a new funding agreement for LIV.

Acknowledging these developments, Burns commented on the uncertainty surrounding LIV. ‘A lot of the LIV stuff is kind of up in the air right now,’ Burns remarked, stating that the future remains unclear.

While no clear return policy exists, Burns hopes that the best golfers will compete together again. ‘I think ultimately you’ll see those guys back at some point,’ he concluded, expressing optimism for the future of golf.
