Russia Faces Challenges in Eastern Ukraine

The Russian military struggles with significant challenges in making progress in eastern Ukraine. Ubiquitous drones complicate their efforts to advance.

Despite Russian President Vladimir V. Putin’s assurances to President Trump of an inevitable victory in Ukraine, the ground reality is different. Putin has urged Kyiv to surrender the entire eastern Donbas region to prevent defeat.

Recently, the Russian military’s progress has slowed. Some regions in Ukraine have even seen Russia losing ground. If the current slow pace continues, it could take decades for Russia to control the entire Donbas. The Kremlin considers this critical for concluding the war.

Factors such as seasonal changes contribute to this slowdown. Russian troops usually gain momentum during summer due to favorable weather and foliage, offering better protection from drones. Ukrainian officials have indicated that Russian forces are preparing for future attacks and have increased their activities along the front lines.

The presence of drones remains a complicated issue for Russia. The traditional approach of charging with large numbers of troops using armored vehicles is less feasible. This fundamental obstacle hinders significant advances.
