Former Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler appeared before the House Oversight Committee. Lawmakers scrutinized her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender. Ruemmler, who resigned from Goldman Sachs due to her Epstein ties, attended a closed-door interview for the committee’s investigation into Epstein. Her association with Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker, also came under examination.
Members from both parties challenged Ruemmler’s claim of a limited relationship with Epstein. Democratic lawmakers argued she should have testified under oath. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., stated, “It’s very clear that she had a pretty friendly relationship with him.” Emails presented during the session indicated multiple meetings and communications between Ruemmler and Epstein.
Ruemmler acknowledged knowing about Epstein’s massages but claimed ignorance of involvement with underage girls. She recognized Epstein’s reputation as a sex offender but cited his wealth and influence as reasons for overlooking his character.
Released emails showed Ruemmler first met Epstein in 2014. Their association continued until 2019, even after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor. Epstein’s suicide in August 2019 occurred while he awaited trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
Highlights from the session included Rep. Yassamin Ansari, D-Ariz., and Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., questioning Ruemmler’s truthfulness to the committee. Garcia expressed doubt over her explanations regarding their ongoing relationship despite Epstein’s criminal past.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., criticized Ruemmler’s relationship with Epstein. “She tried to work harder than anyone to rehabilitate his image,” said Comer. His comments underscore the ongoing concerns surrounding Ruemmler’s judgment and relationship choices.
The probe into Epstein’s connections continues, with the committee pushing for more transparency. The investigation enters its second year, fueled by questions about Epstein’s powerful associations.
