RNC Sues New Jersey Over Voter Roll Transparency

The Republican National Committee (RNC) and state GOP leaders have initiated legal proceedings against New Jersey’s top election official and five county authorities. They filed a lawsuit on Tuesday, alleging failure to provide federally mandated voter roll maintenance records, pushing for greater transparency.

RNC Chairman Joe Gruters expressed concerns over the concealment of records. “The RNC exposed noncitizens on New Jersey’s voter rolls,” Gruters stated. “Election officials are hiding the records that would tell voters how it happened. The RNC won’t stand for it.”

“Garden State voters deserve the truth, and we’re taking these left-wing officials to court to demand answers,” Gruters’ statement added.

The lawsuit claims that while officials have released some documents, New Jersey’s chief election official and county authorities in Bergen, Hudson, Middlesex, Somerset, and Union counties have withheld crucial records mandated by federal law.

This legal action follows the RNC’s discovery of hundreds of noncitizens registered in the voter rolls, initially reported by Fox News Digital in June. During investigations for jury duty evasion, some residents who claimed non-citizenship were found to be registered voters.

Fox News Digital reached out to the New Jersey Secretary of State’s office and the named counties for comment.

The RNC filed a lawsuit in July against the New Jersey secretary of state over allegations of nonresidents – in some cases noncitizens – being allowed to vote in state elections. Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill acknowledged the registrations. However, Republicans argue that state Democrats have avoided accountability and explanation on how noncitizens were added to the voter rolls.

Seeking clarity on how the registrations occurred and whether the ineligible voters were removed, the RNC sent legal demands for voter roll maintenance documents. The lawsuit aims to enforce transparency and safeguard the electoral process. Congressional investigators in Washington are also interested in the withheld records related to these voter registration failures.

This legal challenge is part of the RNC’s nationwide campaign ahead of the midterm elections. The campaign involves dispatching similar requests for voter roll maintenance records to 48 states to ensure proper maintenance of voting registries nationwide. It builds on previous RNC legal actions against New Jersey to contest election procedures.

Joining the lawsuit are Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., and New Jersey Senate Republican Leader Anthony Bucco.

“New Jerseyans deserve complete transparency following Gov. Sherrill’s admission that over 6,600 noncitizens were added to our voter rolls. Fair elections require total public accountability,” said Kean Jr. “Election officials must immediately release these records, so voters get the complete truth.”
