Rising Caseloads in Immigration Courts Spark Due Process Concerns

Immigration judges are experiencing a significant increase in case numbers due to a governmental drive to hasten deportations. Immigration attorneys express concerns that this situation could infringe on due process rights.

On June 3, a family exits the San Antonio Immigration Court. These courts convene ‘mega immigration hearings,’ where each judge may handle over 100 cases daily. This initiative is beginning in several major cities nationwide.

In San Antonio, Judge Cynthia LaFuente-Gaona usually manages several dozen cases each day in a Texas courtroom. Here, individuals plead for the opportunity to continue residing in the United States.
