Rev. Brian Konkol Takes Office as Valparaiso University’s 20th President

Rev. Brian Konkol officially assumed the role of Valparaiso University’s president during a ceremony held on September 25, 2026. Emphasizing values beyond career readiness, Konkol noted the importance of character and faith. The inauguration gathered a diverse audience of students, staff, alumni, and former colleagues across the United States.

Konkol highlighted the essential qualities needed in the world, urging that eulogies should matter more than resumes. According to him, graduates should aspire to more than entry-level jobs. He emphasized Valparaiso University’s commitment to building lives of purpose, including fostering religious devotion and intellectual growth. Personal responsibility and community service are vital, he stated, as graduates are pivotal connectors in society.

Drawing parallels between the present and the past, Konkol noted the continuing relevance of Lutheran tradition in modern times. Innovations like the internet are reshaping communication, similar to how the printing press changed the world centuries ago. Konkol reflected on Martin Luther’s philosophy, asserting the eternal love of God and the importance of life.

“What does the world need from us? Our graduates must be disciplined, lifelong learners bringing love and action,” Konkol declared.

Valparaiso University, established in 1859, operates under Lutheran University Association management since 1925. Konkol aims to reinforce its Lutheran heritage while widening its public influence, encouraging the community to promote VU’s mission.

Numerous attendees offered valuable insights. Lem Cartman, a VU alum and community relations manager, shared that Valpo personally challenged him to engage with profound questions. Emphasizing that education forms individuals beyond achievement, Cartman underscored the necessity of service.

One Region President Matt Wells recognized the indispensable role of Valpo in nurturing discernment, courage, and hope. Wells argued that institutions like Valpo must aid individuals in understanding knowledge’s purpose.

As Rev. Konkol settles into his role, his leadership receives praise from individuals like Syracuse University’s Chancellor J. Michael Haynie for fostering inclusivity and bridge-building across various traditions. Moreover, Valparaiso’s Mayor Jon Costas applauded Konkol’s energetic leadership as vital for the university’s future.

These remarks reflect a shared belief in Valparaiso University’s promising trajectory under Konkol’s presidency, characterized by a return to foundational values and a mission-driven approach to education.
