Republicans Target Senate Seat in Minnesota with Michele Tafoya’s Candidacy

Republicans see an opportunity to gain a Senate seat in Minnesota as GOP nominee Michele Tafoya closes in on Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Fox News has shifted the race closer to Republicans with less than three weeks before the election.

Shift in Dynamics

It’s been nearly 25 years since Republicans won a Senate seat in this predominantly Democratic state. Tafoya, a former NFL sideline reporter, aims to change this by contesting the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Tina Smith. A recent Minnesota Star Tribune/KARE 11 poll indicates Tafoya trailing Flanagan by only four points. Fox News Power Rankings recently adjusted the race from Likely Democrat to Lean Democrat.

The Candidates’ Positions

At the Minnesota Republican State Convention, Tafoya emphasized her independence, claiming Minnesotans want fresh ideas and independent thinkers, highlighting perceived failures of her opponent over the past years.

Flanagan has yet to respond to requests for comments from Fox News Digital.

Key Campaign Issues

The race plays out amid a significant welfare fraud scandal in Minnesota, which has dominated national headlines for a year. Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, a central figure in the scandal, has chosen not to seek re-election. Tafoya has used this scandal to criticize Flanagan, arguing it reflects poorly on her oversight as second-in-command.

Flanagan has admitted to frustration over the scandal, noting she was not directly managing the agencies involved. She has distanced herself from Gov. Walz, who accepted responsibility for the issues.

Crime and Safety Concerns

Tafoya has also spotlighted recent gang-related violence in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. She proposes a five-point plan to address the violence, asserting that naming and addressing the problem are the first steps.

Endorsements and Campaign Strategies

Flanagan enjoys support from progressive leaders like Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Tafoya secured over 50% of the GOP primary vote, supported by national figures like Sen. Tim Scott.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has campaigned with Tafoya. However, the Senate Leadership Fund has not yet made significant investments in this race, though Tafoya reports receiving donations nationwide.

Democratic Support and Controversies

Democrats hope that Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s popularity in the gubernatorial race will bolster Flanagan’s campaign. Democrats criticize Republican efforts to contest the Minnesota seat as a strategic ploy.

Flanagan links Tafoya to former President Donald Trump, whose Minnesota approval ratings are low, contrasting Tafoya’s claim of being a pro-choice Republican willing to stand against her party’s stance when necessary.

Despite criticism from conservative leaders, Trump endorsed Tafoya in a rally, urging voters to support her candidacy.
