Representative Thomas Kean Jr., a Republican congressman, has returned to his New Jersey home after being away from Washington for nearly four months. He was seen on Wednesday evening in his home in Westfield, just before 8:45 p.m.
A reporter from The New York Times visited him, prompting Mr. Kean to greet them by saying, “It’s good to see you.” He was dressed in a dark suit paired with a red tie. Mr. Kean added, “I’ll talk to you next week,” before closing the door, declining to make further comments. His wife, Rhonda Kean, stood smiling in the background.
During his absence, aides mentioned that Mr. Kean, aged 57, was undergoing treatment for a health condition. They claimed he was expected to make a full recovery. However, there were no additional details provided, and Mr. Kean missed more than 100 floor votes since mid-March.
Mr. Kean is seeking re-election for a third term in an upcoming competitive midterm election. His absence had been causing frustration even among his strong Republican supporters as he remained away from the campaign trail.
