Reflecting on the Lingering Impact of September 11

Twenty-five years have passed since the events of September 11, yet the magnitude of the loss remains profound. The passage of time has not diminished the impact on those who experienced it firsthand.

A few hours after the World Trade Center towers fell, a firefighter looked out from an office building window near the site. This image captured both the destruction and the valiant efforts of those involved in the aftermath.

Initially, we referred to the debris as “the pile.” As months went by, those of us involved in the cleanup began calling it “the pit.” This name change reflected our growing familiarity with the site and the ongoing recovery efforts.

For nearly a year, I was stationed in a nearby trailer, handling administrative duties for one of the construction companies tasked with clearing the area. Each day, I observed the progress and the challenges faced by the workers dedicated to rebuilding and restoring the area.
