Rams’ Season Opener in Melbourne Ends in Defeat Against 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams entered the new NFL season with high expectations but faced a tough start with a 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The match, part of the NFL International Series, took place in Melbourne, Australia.

Key to the Rams’ anticipated success was NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, who joined the team to strengthen their defense. Unfortunately, Garrett was not at his best, hindered by an injury from the offseason. His participation in the game was limited as he struggled to make a notable impact.

“This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there, and I’ve got to be better,” Garrett stated after the game.

Trent McDuffie, a new addition to the Rams’ lineup, managed four tackles and defended two passes, while Quentin Lake shone with 10 total tackles and an interception. Garrett, however, recorded no stats in the final box score despite playing approximately 40 snaps. This marked the first time since 2018 that Garrett didn’t achieve any quarterback pressures in a game.

San Francisco’s quarterback Brock Purdy performed efficiently, completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards, with one interception and three touchdowns, despite Garrett’s presence on the field.

Garrett admitted his injury, described by coach Sean McVay as knee swelling, affected his performance. He missed training camp, which contributed to his struggles during the game.

“When I was out there, I was a little bit more focused on myself and trying to stay healthy than what they were doing, and that showed. I wasn’t who I needed to be for my team,” he explained.

A key defensive player, Aaron Donald, was also absent, as he continues to prepare for his return to professional football after retiring in March 2024.

The Rams will have another opportunity to prove themselves when they face the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 21. This game provides a chance to improve and make a strong impression in front of their home crowd.
