President Donald Trump publicly disagreed with U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s conclusion regarding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool damage. Pirro had attributed the damage to substandard construction rather than vandalism, contrary to Trump’s claims.
Pirro’s office recently moved to dismiss charges against David Hearn, a former Olympian accused of damaging the pool after renovations for America’s 250th birthday celebration. Trump acknowledged potential contractor issues but maintained that vandals caused the major damage.
Trump’s insistence contradicted earlier statements from the Justice Department, which had supported his vandalism claims. Yet, no new evidence was provided by the president to substantiate the vandalism theory.
In their court filing, government lawyers indicated the damage stemmed from poor installation and rushed completion. Recent inspections revealed damage throughout the pool, areas unlikely to have been reached by a vandal.
“Given all of this newly discovered information, it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to the Reflecting Pool to vandalism, let alone to establish that fact beyond a reasonable doubt,” Pirro expressed in her court filing.
Trump released a video claiming it showed individuals cutting the liner, though the footage wasn’t conclusive. Nearby workers appeared unaware of any vandalism.
Problems with the pool project arose shortly after its completion, with the liner peeling. Trump had blamed vandals, supported by a National Park Service report detailing a June 9 incident involving a knife or razor.
Trump’s initiatives in Washington also included a $400 million ballroom in the White House’s East Wing and plans for a new arch near the Lincoln Memorial. These projects reflect the president’s broader efforts to reshape the capital’s landmarks.
