El Nino: A Strong One on the Horizon
According to seasonal models, the impending El Nino climate pattern could become the strongest ever recorded. This event is likely to bring more extreme weather changes, as noted by WFLA-TV Chief Meteorologist and Climate Specialist Jeff Berardelli in Tampa, Florida. He emphasized the potential for unprecedented weather events in modern history.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) anticipates the formation of El Nino around mid-year, which would affect global temperature and rainfall patterns. While the models suggest a significant event, the WMO warned that forecasts are less reliable in spring.
Understanding El Nino
El Nino involves a cyclical warming of equatorial Pacific waters, altering global weather patterns. Its counterpart, La Nina, features cooler-than-average waters. Berardelli described El Nino as a process of redistributing Earth’s heat. Currently, heat from deep Pacific waters is moving east and reaching the ocean surface, marking early El Nino stages. The WMO’s Global Seasonal Climate Update highlights rapidly rising sea-surface temperatures. Wilfran Moufouma Okia, chief of climate prediction at the WMO, expressed high confidence in El Nino’s onset and intensification.
El Nino events typically occur every two to seven years, lasting around nine to 12 months.
Growing Concerns
California Institute for Water Resources climate scientist Daniel Swain pointed out that the volume and intensity of subsurface warm water anomalies are as large as historical records show. Known as “super El Ninos,” these events can lead to significant climate impacts.
If the Pacific Ocean releases significant heat, the climate system intensifies, leading to more extreme weather conditions. Berardelli predicted stronger heat waves, severe droughts, and increased flooding due to abundant moisture. El Nino also diminishes the Atlantic hurricane season because of the Pacific’s heat dominance. Caribbean regions may experience drier summers with fewer tropical storms.
Global Effects
El Nino’s impact is global. The United States may experience hotter than average summers, with Berardelli forecasting frequent heat waves and increased thunderstorms in the Southwest. Forest degradation in the Amazon, exacerbated by wildfires, logging, and drought, could worsen during a strong El Nino.
The combination of El Nino-induced heat and climate change-driven planetary warming is expected to cause record-breaking global temperatures. Swain anticipates significant warm temperature records later this year and next.
Climate scientist Michael Mann from the University of Pennsylvania noted that El Nino elevates global temperatures temporarily, oscillating back to La Nina, which lowers temperatures. However, long-term warming driven by fossil fuel use remains a critical concern.
