Porter County Clerk’s Race Overview
The current race for Porter County Clerk features Valparaiso City Council member Barbara Domer, a Democrat, facing off against Republican Jackie Haney, the chief finance deputy. Incumbent Jessica Bailey has termed out after two terms and is pursuing a position as state comptroller.
Barbara Domer’s Vision
Barbara Domer, in her first term on the Valparaiso City Council, is focusing on increasing voter turnout. Her involvement with Indivisible Indiana and the League of Women Voters underscores her commitment. Domer emphasizes that her narrow city council victory by four votes highlights the importance of every vote.
“Your vote is your voice. Voting is a civic duty,” Domer stated, underscoring her desire to be a voice for voter engagement throughout Porter County.
Recognizing the middle-range voter turnout of Porter County compared to statewide figures, Domer plans to expand vote access if elected. She aims to increase the number of voting centers, alongside offering more opportunities with mobile voting vans.
“I would like to see voting options at places like union halls, hospital parking lots, or medical complexes,” Domer suggested.
Efforts to expand voting access need proper communication of details to be effective. Domer stressed the importance of informing voters about the necessary steps to participate.
In leveraging her accounting background, Domer intends to build on the success of the clerk’s office. She believes that advocating for expanded voter access requires a willingness to invest in democracy.
