Democratic Representative Haley Stevens, who lost a Michigan Senate primary to Abdul El-Sayed, has criticized Senator Bernie Sanders, known for his progressive stance, over his Middle East policy. In an interview with The Jerusalem Post, Stevens described Sanders’ viewpoints as part of an anti-Zionist ‘sickness,’ questioning his contributions to peace and Palestinian dignity in the region.
Sanders has consistently advocated for ending U.S. military aid to Israel, often speaking against the Israeli government. Stevens expressed concern over what she perceives as a hate movement of anti-Zionism spreading in the U.S. and parts of the West. She emphasized that Israel is more than a mere punching bag for America’s challenges and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as problematic.
“I believe that anti-Zionism is a hate movement… There is this bizarre obsession… with calling out one country,” Stevens remarked.
After losing the primary, Stevens endorsed El-Sayed but advised him to sever ties with far-left streamer Hasan Piker, with whom he has campaigned. Stevens advocated for the Democratic plans for healthcare, democracy, and Black-owned businesses over the agenda of El-Sayed’s Republican opponent, Mike Rogers.
Stevens’ remarks have drawn responses from various political figures. Qasim Rashid, a SiriusXM radio host and human rights lawyer, criticized Stevens’ comments, stating they are ‘profoundly disappointing’ and quoted human rights documentation labeling Israeli government actions as genocide. Rashid highlighted the U.S. Leahy laws that require cessation of funding to governments involved in human rights atrocities.
“By continuing to insist on arming Israel… Haley Stevens is on the wrong side of history,” Rashid stated.
A poll conducted by NBC News in March revealed that Americans’ opinions on Israel have worsened, particularly among Democrats and independents. Only 32% view Israel positively, with 39% holding a negative view, marking a shift from three years ago.
The political debate within the Democratic Party over support for Israel continues amid ongoing tensions following the conflict between Israelis and Hamas in Gaza. Sanders has also been vocal about banning super PACs from primaries and criticizes AIPAC’s influence on the political system.
