Political Figures Criticized During 9/11 Memorial Events

President Donald Trump, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez found themselves facing backlash due to their actions at 9/11 commemorations. Critics accused them of inappropriate behavior during these solemn events.

Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior

At Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan, Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez were criticized after video footage appeared to show them smiling and laughing during the ceremony. The event involved the reading aloud of names of those who died in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Trump faced accusations of falling asleep during a Pentagon 9/11 memorial ceremony. Images widely shared online showed him sitting with his eyes closed during the event.

Reactions from Critics

Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz questioned why anyone would laugh during the reading of names of those murdered on 9/11, expressing his disapproval on X.

Similarly, conservative commentator Meghan McCain expressed her outrage, while Republican Representative Nancy Mace suggested that laughing during the Ground Zero ceremony indicated public service might not be the right path for those involved.

Defense Against Criticism

Michael Ragusa, a former EMT from the New York City Fire Department, offered a defense. He described himself as a lifelong Republican and claimed the footage of Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani was out of context. According to Ragusa, they were simply greeting each other.

Ragusa added that both political figures behaved respectfully throughout the event, in contrast to others who were inattentive or disrespectful.

Contentious Attendance

Mamdani’s presence was already politically contentious due to calls from some 9/11 victims’ relatives for him to avoid attending. However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul supported his participation. Mamdani attended and was photographed with Rudy Giuliani, who was the city’s mayor during the original attacks.

Trump’s Alleged Misstep

Trump also faced scrutiny over his conduct at the Pentagon memorial in Virginia. His appearance sparked criticism after TV footage showed him with closed eyes. The footage led to allegations of disrespect. Some defended him by citing his participation in a political event the night before.

The White House countered these claims, asserting that Trump was attentively honoring the victims rather than sleeping.

Political Tensions During Remembrance

The events underscored the politicized nature of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. While the New York ceremony focused on victims and families, prohibiting political speeches, the Pentagon event allowed Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to address attendees.

Vice President JD Vance and four former presidents attended the Ground Zero ceremony, emphasizing the memorial’s significance. Regardless of controversies, families prioritized remembering their loved ones.

The attacks on September 11, 2001, resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths. Four commercial planes were diverted by hijackers; two crashed into the World Trade Center, one hit the Pentagon, and the last in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

These ceremonies serve as a stark reminder of the tragedy’s impact and how political figures remain under intense scrutiny.
