A dramatic incident in Phoenix caught the attention of baseball fans as Arizona Diamondbacks’ Ildemaro Vargas and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Max Muncy collided forcefully during a game. Both players were left sore but unharmed after the crash.
During the fifth inning of Arizona’s 3-2 victory over the Dodgers, the collision occurred when Muncy hit a ground ball down the line past first base. Vargas, who was fielding the ball, noticed that pitcher Ryne Nelson was not covering first base. Attempting to beat Muncy, Vargas sprinted forward, but the two collided at high speed, resulting in both players hitting the ground hard on opposite sides of the base.
The stadium fell silent as the players lay on the field, prompting urgent assistance from team trainers. They stayed down for several minutes before heading to their respective dugouts.
Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte expressed surprise at the impact of the collision, stating through a translator, “In my 10 years, I’ve never seen a collision like that.” Meanwhile, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo commented on the situation, “It’s tough to see, but they both got off the field.”
Muncy, who experienced shortness of breath, was evaluated for a concussion. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Muncy would rest on Friday against the Angels, a planned day off, but he may return over the weekend. Muncy expressed concern for Vargas and hoped for his swift recovery.
Vargas sustained bruises on his left thigh, ribs, and neck. Despite the injuries, he received negative X-ray results and stated his readiness to play again soon, saying, “My whole body feels like I ran into a truck, but thankfully all the exams and tests were negative.” His quick return was fortunate, considering the severity of the collision.
