Philadelphia Parade Canceled Due to Extreme Heat

This week marks the 250th anniversary of the United States. Celebrations across the country are taking place, but in Philadelphia, a planned parade was canceled because of expected high temperatures.

Welcome America Inc. announced the cancellation and the city of Philadelphia shared this on their platform. They stated, “Due to the extreme heat, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade is cancelled.”

The National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly highlighted on Friday morning that Philadelphia International Airport could see a record temperature of 104 degrees. This would be the hottest since July 3, 1966.

Philadelphia’s Health Commissioner, Palak Raval-Nelson, extended a “Heat Health Emergency” through Sunday evening, as per the Department of Public Health.

The parade was expected to feature floats and marching bands, making it a notable event for the city.

Michael DelBene, President and CEO of Welcome America Inc., emphasized safety as the priority. He stated, “As much as this decision pains everyone inside our organization, we simply cannot host an event of this size and scale under these dangerous heat conditions.” He expressed disappointment for the organizers who dedicated efforts to the event.

Large-scale celebrations remain their mission, but safety and security for staff, guests, and participants are most important, explained DelBene.
