Matt Gogel, a golfer on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, has been suspended for six months by the organization due to placing bets on PGA Tour events. Gogel issued a statement explaining that he engaged in “small recreational wagers on golf” unknowingly in 2024.
“I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA Tour events, PGA Tour Champions events or any tournament in which I participated,” Gogel stated, as reported by the PGA Tour.
He emphasized his commitment to maintaining the integrity of golf, describing his actions as an honest mistake, and expressed anticipation to return to competition in 2027.
Details of Suspension
Gogel’s suspension starts on Sunday and extends until February 22, 2027. The PGA Tour confirmed that he did not place bets during tournaments where he participated. However, the Tour’s integrity program prohibits wagering on events sanctioned by the PGA.
Past incidents involved other players like Vince India and Jake Staiano on the Korn Ferry Tour, who received three to six-month suspensions for betting on PGA Tour competitions in 2023.
Background and Career
At 55, Gogel’s career includes one PGA Tour victory at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in 2002. After his stint on Tour, he transitioned to a broadcasting role with The Golf Channel and CBS Sports.
Upon turning 50, Gogel joined the PGA Tour Champions, the senior division of the golf organization. Currently, he ranks 20th in the Charles Schwab Cup points race.
