Pete Crow-Armstrong is on track to become one of the best outfielders in baseball. Known for his defensive prowess, Crow-Armstrong impressed Kevin Kiermaier, a seasoned outfielder who won multiple Gold Gloves during his career. Kiermaier first became aware of Crow-Armstrong’s talent while the latter was still in the minors. He had heard about Crow-Armstrong’s impressive speed, arm, and overall play.
In 2024, Kiermaier had the chance to see Crow-Armstrong’s defense up close when he played against the Cubs at Dodger Stadium. He noted it as possibly the most impressive defensive performance he had witnessed. As of now, Crow-Armstrong’s defensive skills have reached new heights. He earned his first Gold Glove Award last year, with another likely for his 2026 season.

The numbers back up Crow-Armstrong’s elite status. He leads MLB outfielders with a +5.0 feet above average jump and covers 39.8 feet on average. Statcast reveals he excels in making low-probability catches. Crow-Armstrong recently surpassed Kiermaier for the most 5-star catches since Statcast began tracking, demonstrating an exceptional 54.7% success rate on these challenging plays.
Through his accomplishments, Crow-Armstrong has made 35 5-star catches in 1,123 innings. In contrast, Kiermaier recorded 32 in 2,118 innings. Crow-Armstrong continues to impress with his speed and ability to make plays others can’t reach. As Kiermaier reflected on these numbers, he expressed admiration and respect for Crow-Armstrong’s defensive capabilities.
Kiermaier, who still holds the highest Outs Above Average (OAA) record with 91, acknowledged Crow-Armstrong’s trajectory. While Kiermaier humorously admitted to feeling competitive, he recognized Crow-Armstrong’s potential to redefine outfield defense.
He’s on a trajectory where his numbers will be outstanding,Kiermaier said.
Kiermaier’s retired career focused on defense, leading him to instruct with the Toronto Blue Jays. He later founded the 3-9 Effect to train outfielders on improving defensive skills, a cause he’s passionate about.
Despite never meeting in person, Crow-Armstrong and Kiermaier remain in contact, exchanging messages of admiration. Kiermaier hopes to meet Crow-Armstrong someday but will continue to watch his performances. Crow-Armstrong looks set to remain elite for years, with Kiermaier praising his current accomplishments and future potential.
