A Republican lawmaker from Pennsylvania was asked to leave the State House chamber, controlled by Democrats, due to his choice of attire celebrating the U.S. 250th anniversary. This event occurred as the nation prepares for its semiquincentennial celebrations with various events and fairs.
Pennsylvania, a key swing state, often experiences political tensions. The current political climate involves Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, holding the executive branch, a Democrat-controlled House with a slim majority, and a Republican-controlled Senate with a four-seat majority. Such dynamics can lead to conflicts, as seen with State Representative Eric Davanzo.
Representative Davanzo, from Westmoreland County, was taken by surprise when House Speaker Joanna McClinton expressed disapproval of his patriotic red, white, and blue outfit during a session. The incident unfolded as he was speaking with fellow Republican, House Minority Whip Timothy O’Neal. Davanzo recounted how he was informed that his attire was deemed inappropriate, leading to his ejection from the session.
Despite being asked to remove his suit jacket, Davanzo chose to leave the House floor entirely. Some Democratic colleagues approached Davanzo afterwards, expressing disagreement with his removal. Notably, Representative Jordan Davis of Philadelphia commented positively on the patriotic nature of Davanzo’s suit.
Davanzo highlighted the inconsistency in dress code enforcement, referencing a recent instance when lawmakers were encouraged to wear pride colors for a House photo. He questioned why pride colors were acceptable while his patriotic attire was not, accusing the leadership of hypocrisy.
“You’re only able to love freely because the brave men and women died for this flag,” stated Davanzo.
The lawmaker referenced the historical significance of the Declaration of Independence’s signing 250 years ago and identified himself as a “Bicentennial Baby,” born in 1976. As the leader of the America First Caucus in the State House, Davanzo emphasized initiatives such as promoting domestic manufacturing and implementing strict penalties for certain crimes involving illegal immigrants.
Expressing his commitment to his constituents, Davanzo explained his initiative to distribute $250 checks to Pennsylvania households in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. He defended his attire as a symbol of his patriotism.
