Overview of the Upcoming Chicago Mayoral Election

The next Chicago mayoral election is scheduled for February 23, 2027. As of now, there are 10 candidates who have officially announced their campaigns, with expectations of more to join the race in the coming months. This diverse lineup includes seasoned politicians as well as fresh faces in the political arena. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote on February 23, a runoff between the top two candidates will be held on April 6, 2027, followed by the inauguration in May.

Declared Candidates

Brandon Johnson has confirmed his bid for a second term, closing speculation over his plans. Johnson emphasized his commitment to furthering his progressive agenda at City Hall.

Willie Wilson, a businessman from the South Side known for his philanthropy and his role as a pioneering Black McDonald’s franchise owner, has announced his candidacy for the fourth time. Wilson plans to uphold conservative positions.

Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois Secretary of State, has entered the race, reinforcing his status as a frontrunner with significant campaign funds and union support.

George Cardenas, Cook County Board of Review Commissioner, is no stranger to Chicago politics. He has entered the race with detailed policy proposals aimed at enhancing efficiency.

Mike Quigley, U.S. Representative, has declared his candidacy, criticizing Johnson’s economic strategies while advocating for budget cuts at City Hall.

Susana Mendoza, Illinois Comptroller, is campaigning again, aspiring to become Chicago’s first Latina mayor. She pledges to address fiscal challenges effectively.

Joe Holberg is a former math teacher and entrepreneur. His campaign focuses on his outsider status and personal resilience.

John Kelly is a seasoned lobbyist currently representing Bally’s, the contractor for Chicago’s first casino.
