Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington has introduced a new legislative proposal named Orlin’s Law, aimed at safeguarding immigrant families from deportations. The bill was filed on Thursday, and its primary goal is to restrict U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from detaining or deporting immigrant parents unless they pose a public safety threat.
The proposal is named after a tragic case involving a three-year-old Florida boy, Orlin Hernandez Reyes, who lost his life after his mother was deported by ICE. This law seeks to protect other families from experiencing similar tragedies, ensuring that immigrant parents are not separated from their children without a substantial justification based on public safety concerns.
Rep. Jayapal emphasized the importance of keeping families together and addressing the trauma and harm caused by deportation. Such policies aim to promote a more humane approach to immigration enforcement, focusing on the welfare and unity of families.
